Accelerate’s Math Experience is featured in a pilot project at the University of New Mexico’s Innovation Academy. Dr. Mario Rivera, Regents’ Professor and lead evaluator for the Accelerate program’s remedial math class, is teaching a Public Administration 522 course on program evaluation. This graduate course involves students in current evaluation projects, particularly Accelerate New Mexico’s Math Experience, a remedial math program funded by the Department of Energy involving UNM-Los Alamos and UNM-Taos in retraining nontraditional students for certification and employment in STEM fields. The course helps students in Public Administration, Political Science, Education, CRP, Water Resources, and Sociology bridge the theory-practice gap, developing analytical and methodological skills that pertain to community- engaged, culturally-responsive research, on the basis of an experiential and collaborative learning pedagogy.
